Laminate floors do not stain, fade, dent, or warp like real hardwood floors, although they have a similar cost. They also often include lifetime warranties against most problems and defects. If your home has significant foot traffic (including children and/or pets) then a laminate floor will hold up much better than a comparable wood or even tile floor, and be considerably less expensive than stone flooring materials.

If you have a lot of traffic in your home and plan to stay there for some time, laminate flooring may prove to be the best value for your money because of its long life, durability and excellent warranty coverage. It is not the least expensive flooring option, so it is always important to weigh the costs and features against your needs. If you want the look of hardwood but have a sub-floor that is incompatible with real hardwood floors, laminate flooring may be the choice for you!

Why Laminate

Moisture. Being more tolerant to moisture, it can more readily be used in bathrooms or other areas where moisture may pose problems for other flooring materials – as long as the manufacturer’s warranty includes moisture coverage. Because of its simple tongue and groove attachment pattern, it can be utilized in virtually any room of the house, provided that there is a concrete, plywood, or other firm floor surface below it.

Sound proof. Laminate flooring can be a reasonably good choice for sound reduction with the addition of a quality underlayment. In addition to absorbing sound, a layer underlayment will add a feeling of solidity to the floor and reduce the hollow percussive sound that footfalls can produce when laminate flooring is floated over a subfloor without the benefit of underlayment. The underlayment pads a laminate floor much in the same way that a pad works under carpet, adding give for extra comfort and insulation for overall warmth.

Pattern for maintenance. Woods with stronger graining are better for hiding the scratches. Oak is a great example of this, especially red which has stronger graining than white oak. Finish Build flooring products like Oak or grey looks do an excellent job of hiding the dents and scratches due to the strong graining.

Quick installation. The tongue and groove or click lock design of the laminate flooring makes its installation process relatively easy. With the help of a friend or two, it is possible to finish the whole flooring all by yourselves within just one day, depending on the size of the room. Also, before you start laying down the laminate flooring, it’s really important to make sure that the base floor is clean and that you have had the underlayment all done to prevent moisture from seeping through the floor.

Felt pads. This is especially important for massage tables. In order to avoid scratches, try felt pads underneath furniture and area rugs/entrance mats. Oh, and stay away from chairs with wheels – often thing get caught in the wheels and cause scratches. If you do have chairs with wheels, put an area rug underneath. And, make sure you have area rugs/entrance mats at all your main entries. You can even have one outside, too. These are the areas that get worn down the fastest due to rain, snow, salt, dirt, so protecting these areas will go a long way towards preserving your floors.

Maintenance. Cleaning laminate floors is easy and comparable to cleaning other hard surfaces such as hardwood floors. It is generally not recommended to mop laminate floors as this has been shown to cause damage by soaking into the composite portion which allows warping over time. Most manufacturers suggest using dry methods such as brooms to clean with occasional wet cleaning with more specialized mop-type products that do not leave excessive water on the flooring.
